Interview with John Zetzl
Gillam & Zetzl, Inc. CPA - Richmond, IN

How long have you owned your own business?

10 years.

What are some of the things you like about owning your own business?

The flexibility to set my own schedule (but balanced with client needs) and the ability to essentially determine how much I will earn based upon how hard I choose to work (I dictate my own work-life balance).

What are some of the things you dislike about owning your own business?

Like most small business owners, the administrative functions like paying bills, staying current on professional compliance issues, handling personnel matters and the like.

What were some of the big hurdles you had to get over when you started your business?

Aside from the obvious hurdles like locating a building, setting up a computer network and hiring quality staff, probably our biggest hurdle was to persuade potential clients to give a start-up CPA firm an opportunity. For most people the relationship with their CPA requires a strong level of trust because they are bearing their financial souls to you. In order to be successful you must be able to make the client comfortable that you will be their ally through thick and thin. This requires convincing the clients that your firm will have the longevity to be there when they really need you the most. For a start-up enterprise this can be a tough assignment.

What advice would you give to a person who wants to start a new business?

Choose an business area that you have a real passion for, but make sure it is financially viable. It is critical to research the potential business type before making a decision purely based upon emotion. Utilize an attorney and an experienced CPA to assist you in determining if your idea has legs. An outside perspective is an important element in any large decision.

Do you see the Innovation Center as a good resource for someone starting a new business?

The Innovation Center is a good resource for starting a new business in certain economic segments. A consulting type business, for example, would be a great fit for this type of incubator atmosphere.
